We were reminiscing recently about the time we visited the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre in Borneo and it set us thinking about palm oil again. So here for the record is what we think about palm oil.
A lot of peanut butter brands include palm oil in their peanut butter, it is there solely to prevent the natural peanut oil separating and rising to the top of the jar over time. Palm oil is very high in saturated fat (it is actually solid at room temperature – a bit like lard!), but by far the biggest reason we don’t include it in our peanut butter is because the rainforests are being cleared at an alarming rate in order to make way for palm oil plantations. In the last 20 years, the orangutan population of Borneo has halved as a result of palm oil plantations and we don’t want any part in this! As a very small manufacturer of peanut butter, we know that our impact on this issue will be limited, but every journey starts with a small step and the whole reason that we set our business up in the first place was so that we could do things our way and be true to our principles. So we will continue to make our peanut butter without the addition of palm oil and using glass jars rather than plastic!
